Welcome Tidbits

All Star Success

It's our honor to share with you our recent awards for quality and patient and employee satisfaction. Thomson Reuters has ranked us in its 100 Top Hospitals for seven consecutive years. In West Michigan, we've been named a Best and Brightest Workplace ten times.

Most recently, we've received HealthGrades' Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence, reached the top 5% of hospitals for Outstanding Patient Experience, and earned HealthGrades' five-star ratings for Orthopedic services.

Achieving and maintaining the highest quality standards requires discipline and a sustained commitment to systematically improve quality. We're pleased to be counted among those organizations who've received ISO 9001:2008 certification. Only a handful of hospitals in Michigan have met the stringent International Organization for Standardization (ISO) guidelines.

Through ISO certification, we've proven our ability to proactively prevent problems, better define patient and provider needs and expectations, and increase overall patient satisfaction.

National recognition and awards are a testament to the quality of care we provide. And our patients are the best judges. Our survey's show that 99% of patients would choose Holland Hospital again and 98% would recommend us to family and friends.

Top-quality care begins with the consistent use of best hospital practices. Our participation in the Michigan Health & Hospital Association's Keystone program gives us access to best-practice models being used by peer hospitals. DNV, our accrediting organization, also provides us with outstanding health care models from across the country.

To meet the unique needs of those we serve with the highest standards of nursing excellence is the mantra our nursing team lives on a daily basis. With over 800 nurses on staff, we're proud of our exceptional nurse to patient ratio which continually supports our commitment to quality of care and an exceptional patient experience.

Partners Tidbits

Our medical staff, physician partners, nurses, and all Holland Hospital employees work together to help patients achieve optimal health and wellness.

We continue to successfully meet the health care needs of our growing West Michigan communities. Since 2008, we've added over 20 new primary care physicians and specialists to our medical staff, some to replace retiring physicians and some to support population increases.

Patient-Centered Approach
Today, primary care providers and patients partner to manage personal health and engage in prevention and disease management. This Patient-Centered Medical Home approach encourages a physician-led team collaborative. Tools like the Lakeshore Patient Portal provide patients with convenient, secure 24-hour online access to test results and communication options.

From dedicated primary care providers to leading specialists, we help ensure local access to top-quality health care experts in 34 specialties.

Proactive Collaboration
Lakeshore Health Partners, the Bone & Joint Center, and Western Michigan Urological Associates make up the Holland Hospital family of medical groups, a partnership of more than 40 primary and specialty care physicians and nearly 20 mid-level providers. This proactive collaboration ensures that high-quality care and advanced technology are available in 12 convenient locations.

Holland Hospital medical groups served more than 26,000 patients in fiscal year 2012 – nearly a 40 percent increase over last year.

Ever-Improving Care

We take our mission to continually improve our community's health seriously. In the ever-changing health care landscape, this often means streamlining our processes and skills to keep pace with the latest medical advances and continue to offer you best-practice care.

This year our Emergency Department earned Primary Stroke Center Certification — an important clinical designation showing that we consistently deliver rapid, state-of-the-art stroke care with proven results. This certification places us among a select number of hospitals across the nation that meet rigorous standards for exceptional stroke treatment.

Our expert team includes emergency physicians, neurologists, neurosurgeons, nurses, radiologists, rehabilitation staff, lab staff and other caregivers – all ready 24/7 to meet the urgent needs of stroke patients with first-class care.

The Emergency Department also leads the way in use of sophisticated computer technology to improve health care quality and efficiency. Emergency physicians and staff now enter orders for medications, lab tests and radiology procedures directly into our computerized record system, bringing us closer to our goal of hospital-wide electronic patient health records.

In September, our surgery area completed a carefully planned three-year expansion providing larger surgical suites built to accommodate high-tech orthopedic and neurosurgical equipment.

Our general surgeons, orthopedic, vascular and neurosurgical specialists, and surgical support staff embrace the latest technology and best practices to deliver consistently safe, high-quality care. As a result, our patients have shorter hospital stays and improved recovery times.

Expertise Tidbits

As your and your family's health care needs naturally evolve and change, we offer the medical expertise, advanced technologies, convenient facilities, and caring compassion you can depend on.

This year we made it even easier for women to get personalized health care in our area. In January, our growing family of providers introduced Lakeshore Health Partners–Women's Health with physicians who focus on women's unique health needs at every age, including primary, midlife and menopause care.

Additionally, through Holland Hospital Women's Services, women have specialists and the most up-to-date medical technology available to them in all areas of breast, bone, bladder and pelvic health, and more.

In April, women from around the area participated in our Physician Lecture Series on Women's Health A to Z, presented by a panel of seven physicians with special interest in female health concerns. Providing wellness services, routine care and advanced treatments for women continues to be one of our most important initiatives.

Stewardship Tidbits

Holland Hospital is committed to providing the highest level of medical care to improve patients' health, regardless of their ability to pay. Unreimbursed care, bad debt and charity care represent costs we absorb as our physicians, nurses and staff bring that commitment to life for every patient.

Our investment in the health and well-being of our community also extends to many Community Benefit activities that bring health care resources to people outside the hospital walls. Chief among these are programs ensuring that our area's most vulnerable populations, including under- and uninsured individuals and families, have access to high-quality, affordable health care on an ongoing basis.

School Nursing

School Nursing Program

Our school nurses and health aides treat illnesses, dispense medications, and serve as frontline health advocates for 6,700 students in Holland, West Ottawa and Fennville schools. This also means forging connections with parents and linking them to community resources. Our RNs also serve as consultants for staff in Hamilton and Holland Christian schools. For parents of children with diabetes, asthma or other chronic diseases, knowing that there's help during the school day makes a big difference – and it might help their student be a better learner!

Giving Back to the Community

We continue to provide significant financial support for the Holland Community Health Center. In the past five years, the Health Center's patient load has doubled as the Michigan economy has struggled. It now serves 400 patients a month — nearly half of whom are children — and logs 10,000 visits a year.

Forward Tidbits

Holland Hospital's investments in new technologies and facilities provide a high return for our patients as they benefit from the most up-to-date treatments. As our community's needs evolve, we will continue to stay at the forefront of medical advancements that offer you and your family the best possible care.

Our ongoing support for orthopedic health is one example. Bone, joint and neurological concerns are increasing as our population ages and becomes more active. To meet this rapidly expanding need, we're constructing a new Ortho/Spine Unit with over 23,000 square feet and 24 private rooms dedicated exclusively to orthopedic and neurosurgery care.

Forward Tidbits

Our ortho/spine services currently outperform other hospitals nationally for quality outcomes and patient satisfaction. This year, we received Healthgrades' Joint Replacement Center of Excellence Award along with their top 5-Star rating for overall Orthopedic Services. Our new Ortho/Spine Unit opening in 2013 reaffirms Holland Hospital as a destination center for orthopedic care.

Our heart care is another area recognized for high performance. Holland Hospital's treatment of heart attacks is ranked among the best by the National Registry for Myocardial Infarction. In 2012, our cardiology program was awarded the national ACTION Registry–GWTG Gold Performance Achievement Award for the third consecutive year.

Convenient Access

In response to requests from physicians and patients, we began offering mobile unit PET/CT scans this year at the Holland Hospital Medical Building in Zeeland.

It's estimated that PET/CT demand may grow as much as 30% in the next several years. The mobile unit allows us to offer this vital service cost-effectively in cooperation with other medical facilities.

Not all our recent advancements can be readily seen, but benefits are clear. Similar to package tracking technology, our new Laboratory Information System (LIS) provides physicians with more timely access to blood culture results, meaning faster diagnosis and treatment combined with real-time bedside label printing this means patients have fewer instances of repeat draws.

Holland Hospital is unique in that we offer a comprehensive range of inpatient and outpatient mental health services to address the needs of all ages. This year our Behavioral Health Services expanded into new facilities. With 24 counseling offices and rooms dedicated for group therapy and family counseling, the client-friendly facility confirms our commitment to treat the whole person – body, mind and spirit – for each patient we serve.
